This step-by-step (or lash-by-lash) tutorial will show you how to use mascara to achieve astonishing results

How to put on mascara: a step by step guide

Never forego enhancing your eyes for fear of not knowing how to apply mascara correctly!

By following these steps, you’ll learn how to flawlessly apply your mascara, whilst also discovering the myriad of effects that can be achieved to bestow a new and bewitching light upon your eyes.

No doubt, you’re all now wondering how to use lengthening or curling mascara: let's find out how to achieve eye make-up that any celebrity would be proud of.

Mascara is the last step of your eye makeup routine, which for a complete look should also include primer, eyeliner and eyeshadow.
Before applying your mascara, you’ll want to give your lashes a ‘more curved’ shape: use an eyelash curler to help you. Press gently on the upper lashes and repeat if necessary, until you reach the curve you want.
Sometimes you may find that your lashes are somehow stuck together, and the best way to separate them is to comb them, either before or after having applied mascara.
When using the wand, the most common mistake that we make is to push it into the tube before pulling it out to coat the brush with the product.
The most effective technique, instead, is to slowly rotate the wand, so that it picks up just the right amount of pigment and product. Stand or sit in front of the mirror and start by applying the mascara from the bases of your lashes, close to the roots, and combing upwards.
Need some extra volume? Apply your volumizing mascara in a zig-zag motion, remember to start from the base of the lashes and work upwards towards the tips.

You can also achieve a nice volumizing effect by using KIKO MILANO’s base coat before applying your everyday mascara. This base will give your lashes more volume and thickness and at the same time, help prevent mascara from clumping.

After applying mascara to the upper lashes, enhance your lower lashes using the same technique, but this time with a lighter and gentle touch, considering that the lower lashes are usually shorter and sparser.
The best way to not apply too much product on your lower lashes is simply not to re-insert the wand into the tube but just use what’s on the brush.

How to apply curling mascara

The secret to having nice and curled lashes is the technique used to apply your curling mascara.
After properly curling with an eyelash curler, place your mascara brush close to the roots of your lashes and slowly move upwards slightly rotating the wand for a flawless curling effect. Remember to take your time so you are sure to properly follow the direction of your lashes and apply it well.
Curling mascaras ease the application thanks to the way they are designed. The curve on the brush is made to perfectly follow the natural orientation of your lashes, ensuring a flawless and even application.
If you want to achieve great curled lashes and a volumizing effect, KIKO MILANO’s ultra tech mascara has 2 styles in 1: the bristles on the lower part of the brush will lift and give you perfectly curved lashes and natural volume, while if you use the upper part before the lower, you will add something extra to your look.

How to apply mascara without clumping or smudging

Following a few simple tips will allow you to get 100% out of your mascara without smudging or clumping.

1.    Always remove your makeup at the end of the day, making sure that there is no residue left on your lashes.

2.    Use a base on your lashes to ease the application of your black mascara. This will also add volume and make your lashes seem naturally long!

3.    Hold the wand straight up to better reach your inner lashes.

4.    Don’t add too much product. If before applying your mascara you notice that there is a bit more product than needed on the bristles, gently sweep it on a cotton pad or on a tissue to get rid of the residue.

5.    Use the comb side of your brow brush to remove any excess and to separate your lashes.

6.    Choose a waterproof mascara during rainy or hot summer days. The quick-drying formula will prevent your mascara from smudging throughout the day.

7.    Choose a wand that follows the natural shape of your eye and the orientation of your lashes.

8.    After having applied your mascara, use one of your fingers to slightly tap on the tips of your lashes to remove any extra product.

What if smudging does occur?  Fear not, you can wipe it off with a cotton pad or by soaking a cotton bud in your favorite KIKO MILANO’s makeup remover and lightly pressing it onto the skin. This way you are sure to only remove the smudge and not your face makeup.
A good tip to keep in mind if you are just beginning to use makeup is to apply your eye makeup before your face makeup, so if there is smudging you don’t have to worry about retouching other parts of your face.
